Subject of the Lesson

Locating the primary and secondary sources about Japan's cotton/textile industry from the Meiji period that consisted of "grey literature"

Audience:

Both Undergraduate and Graduate students as well as Researchers

Learning Objectives1

Participants will be able to:

  • enhance skills and ability to utilize library resources and services
  • understand various types of literature (primary and secondary sources: articles, statistics, opinion, news, etc.)
  • understand concept of grey literature (producers, types, characteristics, and functions)
  • select appropriate index databases for both primary and secondary resources
  • select appropriate databases for grey literature on cotton/textile industry
  • search appropriate databases effectively to locate relevant literature for the topic
  • understand the strengths and weaknesses of relevant databases for the topic
  • critically evaluate web sites for grey literature
  • locate relevant literature on cotton/textile industry
  • identify important primary and secondary sources for the topic
  • obtain identified literature not available at one's own library through interlibrary loan (ILL) services

  • Understanding concept of grey literature

    Organizational charts
  • Identifying types of resources for cotton/textile industry that fall into grey literature
  • Where to find various types of literature for cotton/textile industry
    Primary and Secondary Sources: selecting indexes -- searching NACSIS WebCat, NDL OPAC, and OCLC WorldCat
  • Grey literature: selecting indexes (consult with "Grey Literature" in Reischauer Institute's Newsletter, Tsushin, Vol. 8, No. 2)
  • Evaluating Resources on the Web
    Identifying important primary literature on cotton/textile industry
  • How to get help in the library
    Obtaining identified literature not available at one's own library Effective use of ILL services
