About the Library:

The central library dates back to 1876, when Sapporo Agriculture School was founded, as a small library with 6,149 books.

Today, the Central Library holds more than 1,649,551 volumes (908,867 in Japanese and 740,684 in Western languages), with 30,747 periodical titles (18,854 in Japanese  and 11,893 in Western languages, as of March, 2011).

Notable Collection(s):

  • Inazo Nitobe collection:  This collection mainly consists of information materials related to agriculture and economy, including a variety of books on the United States and European colonies from the late 19th century to the early 20th century.
  • Takajiro Minami collection: The collection's main focus is on materials related to agriculture and agricultural policy, including books on animal husbandry and horticulture.
  • Kingo Miyabe collection: The collection mainly consists of information materials related to botany, crop science and forestry both inside and outside of Japan.
  • Kanzo Uchimura collection: The collection focuses on materials related to Christianity, philosophy, history and natural science.

Note: The Guide uses the ALA/LC standard romanization, however, it also reflects different romanization system used by an individual institution.

How to Use the Facility

Using the Library

Upon Arrival:

  • The online catalog: Hokkaido University Library Catalog
  • Please present some form of personal ID that shows the current address to obtain a one day pass ( 一日利用証 Ichinichi riyōshō) for the library use and photocopy.
Photocopy:
  • Photocopy services are provided in accordance with Japanese copyright laws.
  • The copy machines accept 10 yen coins or greater, 1,000 yen bill, or a copy card.  Please purchase at the vending machine in the library or the university co-op.
