About the University Museum
The University Museum was created following the 1997 renovation and expansion of the University Storage Center for Research Materials. The University Storage Center for Research Materials was founded in 1966 to collect, classify, and preserve natural, cultural, and historical research materials that had been assembled by Tokyo University scholars and staff since it's opening in 1877. The museum's collection contains more than 3 million academic artifacts.
The major activities of the museum include providing access to materials for research and education, publishing literature about the materials including digital publications, making them available and searchable by creating database search engines, organizing exhibitions, and promoting research related to the museum collections.
The University Museum has two principal departments, those of Research and of Material Science. The Department of Research includes Curatorial Studies, Museum Collection Utilization Studies, and Museum Informatics and Media Studies.
The Department of Material Science includes collections in many subject areas: Earth Science (Mineralogy, Petrology and Mineral Deposits, Mining, Historical Geology and Palaeontology, and Geography), Biology (Botany, Forest Botany, Pharmaceutical Science, Zoology, Fishery, Physical Anthropology and Prehistory, Medicine) and Cultural History (Archaeology, History of Architecture, Archaeology of Fine Arts, History of Fine Arts, and Cultural Anthropology).
