About the Library:

The Interfaculty Initiative in Information Studies (III) Library holds materials related to information media including newspapers, magazines, radio, television, telecommunications, movies, advertising.
 
In addition, the library owns a variety of rare materials such as materials related to media control with a focus on the fascist period in Japan, a wood block printed newspaper collection from the end of the Edo Era, a collection of Nishiki-e from the beginning of the Meiji Period (Hideo Ono Collection), and a collection of propaganda posters from World War I.

Founded in 1946, the Institute of the Social Science (Shaken or ISS) has promoted empirical social science studies by applying data collected from a series of comparative studies

Notable Collection(s):

  • Ono Hideo (小野秀雄) Collection: Japanese woodblock prints and other historical materials collected by Ono Hideo, the first president of IJCS, and his predecessor.
  • Chiyu Bunko (痴遊文庫): Popular books on history and politics collected by the entertainer Ito Chiyu (伊藤痴遊 about 1,300 items).
  • Thesis materials: Master's and doctoral theses of the Institute of Socio-Information and Communication Studies Graduate Courses.

Note: The Guide uses the ALA/LC standard romanization, however, it also reflects a different romanization system used by an individual institution or collection.

How to Use the Facility

Using the Library

Prior to the Visit: Advance Inquiry Recommended

  • Please verify the desired material is available by using UT OPAC.
  • Please consult the III library about the availability of information materials by e-mail or fax. 
  • To make sure that materials will be available, please send library materials request (図書閲覧願 Tosho etsuran negai) form through your home institution library. Please use the following form if the home institution does not have one:
    • Library Materials Request Form (Word,  PDF)

Upon Arrival:

  • Please present some form of personal ID.
  • Please ask the library staff if the materials that you requested are on reserve.
  • Please fill out material title(s) and call number(s) on (図書雑誌出納請求票 Tosho zasshi shutsunō) and submit at the library counter.
  • Up to 5 items per request.

Photocopy:

  • Fill out the copy request form (文献複写申込書 Bunken fukusha mōshikomisho) at the counter.
  • Copy Fee:
    • Black: 10 yen
    • Color: 50 yen

Accessing Rare Materials

  • Please fill out "貴重資料利用願".
  • Please submit the form at least 2 weeks prior to your visit.
