About the museum:

The Meiji University Museum was opened in April, 2004.  The permanent exhibit of museum is divided into three departments: Commodity, Criminal Material, Archeology.  
 
The Commodity Department which is the successor to the "Commodities Museum" holds lacquer ware, textiles, bamboo wood crafts and ceramics and many more.  The Criminal Materials Department displays items contemplates law and human rights.  They include: written criminal laws from the Edo to the recent time, police weapons and other equipment, trail records, and pictures which depict different tortures from the Edo period.  Finally, the Archeology Department, formerly the "Archeological Museum", holds a variety of materials from the Jōmon pre-historic period to Yayoi period.
 
In addition, the museum library holds information resources, which are related to the those three museum departments and Excavation report of buried cultural properties.

How to Use the Facility

Visiting the Museum

Admission to the permanent exhibition is free.  Admissions to the special exhibit may be charged.

Using the Library

Open to the public. Library materials can only be viewed in the library. No borrowing services available.

Upon Arrival:

  • User is only allowed to bring pens and valuable.  Other belongs are stored in the locker by the entrance
  • Unless those who requested old documents (please ask the staff), taking photo is not allowed.
  • The use of cell phones are not allowed

Photocopy:

  • Hours: 10:00-16:20
  • Please ask staff for "Bunken fukusha mōshikomisho (文献複写申込書)" at the counter and fill out the form.
  • Photocopy services are provided in accordance with Japanese copyright laws.
  • Copy machines are located on each floor.
  • Copy Fee:
    • Black: 10 yen per sheet
    • Color: 30 yen per sheet
