About the Library:

The Central Library was opened in 1881. After the Great Kanto Earthquake, there were only 71 volumes remained.  Today, the library holds 140,000 volumes.  The library is located at the Surugadai Campus.

Collection Size (As of 2015):​

• Books: 1,219,761 volumes
  • Japanese books: 803,976 volumes 
  • Non Japanese books:415,785 volumes
• Periodicals:15,242 titles
  • Japanese: 10,125 titles
  • Non Japanese: 5,117 titles

  • Journal: 12,408 titles
  • Non Japanese: 744 titles".

Note: The Guide uses the ALA/LC standard romanization, however, it also reflects different romanization system used by an individual institution.

Using the Library

Users can access to the library materials (without CD-ROMs) and photocopy service.

Prior to the Visit: Advance Inquiry and Preparation Required

• Please ask the home institution library to contact them to verify the desired material is available (by Fax).

• Please verify the desired material is available by using OPAC.

• After receiving a reply from the library, please ask the home institution library to issue a referral letter (please feel free to use Library Materials Request Form
• Material Request Form ( Word,  PDF).

• Letter of Introduction (紹介状 Shōkaijō) from your home institution library (please use the following form if the home institution does not have one):

• A letter of Introduction (Word,  PDF)

Upon Arrival:

• Please present the referral letter and some form of personal ID.

Accessing Rare Materials
