The Santa Barbara campus was incorporated into the University of California in 1944. Originally a small teachers' college, the campus now hosts over 1,000 faculty and nearly 22,000 students, with over 200 majors, degrees, and credentials.
The Japanese progam at UCSB started in 1966, while the East Asian Languages and Cultural Studies Department was created in 1994, including Chinese and East Asian Studies as well.
Minimal amounts of Japanese materials are available in several other libraries on the UCSB campus, including the Ethnic & Gender Studies Library and Sciences-Engineering Library.

The East Asia Center at the University of California Santa Barbara organizes and sponsors lectures, film screenings, and other activities on campus, as well as offering a small travel grant for graduate students.
