About the library:

The main library for the University of California at Santa Barbara houses the majority of the university's library collections, including the main library collection, the map imagery lab, the curriculum lab, the special collections, and more. Collections such as the Arts Collection and East Asian Collection are housed in the main library building. See specific pages or Library Map for more information.

Special Note: As of May 2023 the Music library is still in a separate location in the Music Building, but plans are moving forward to move and combine it with the Art Collection currently housed in the Main Library. Please see website for more details.

UC Santa Barbara Database List
UC Santa Barbara allows access to hundreds of databases, including seventeen under the Japanese Studies subject heading and 47 under the East Asian Studies subject heading. All databases can be accessed on-campus at UCSB, however nearly all of them are restricted to on-site access only.

UC Sant Barbara Library Subject Guides
University of California Santa Barbara faculty and staff develop subject and course guides that are then hosted on the website (link above) by UCSB. These include research guides, area guides, arts, engineering, language & literature guides, and more.

Summary of Collections

Collection size: as of January 2014 the Davidson Library's collection totalled more than 1.1 million items of which only about 900 are in Japanese. The Davidson Library's main collection focuses on supporting the academic departments at the University of California Santa Barbara that do not have independent library collections, and therefore is very interdisciplinary. Several notable collections, comprising over a third of the Davidson Library collection, are listed below.

Notable Collections:

Curriculum Lab: a resource center for materials intended for students grades K-12, this lab has instructional materials primarily collected for student teachers at UCSB.
Government Information Center: a collection of government documents, taken from agencies of the U.S., California, Santa Barbara City and County, foreign countries, international organizations, and the western states of the U.S. Use of the Interlibrary loan system is necessary to request government documents from this collection.
Map & Imagery Lab: a collection of maps, aerial photographs, and other types of remote sensing data and GIS data from around the globe, including 178 Japanese-language items.
Special Collections: the home to all the rare books and special collections at UCSB, this includes collections such as the American Religions Collection, California Ethnic and Multicultural Archives, Darwin/Evolution Collection, Rare Books and Printed Collections, University Archives, and more. Notable Collections

Curriculum Resources
Resource collection of instructional materials for grades K-12. While it is designed primarily to serve student teachers in the UCSB Teacher Education Program, the collection is open to all library users.
Government Information
The UCSB Library collects publications from the governmental agencies of the United States, California, Santa Barbara City and County, foreign countries, international organizations, and the western states of the U.S. Government Documents in the UC System but not at UCSB may be requested through Inter-library loan.
Geospatial Collection
UCSB Library is home to one of the country's largest map, aerial photograph, and GIS data collections. Our historical aerial photograph collection is the largest such collection in any academic library.
Special Collections
Home to all the rare books and special collections at UCSB, this includes collections such as the American Religions Collection, California Ethnic and Multicultural Archives, Darwin/Evolution Collection, Rare Books and Printed Collections, University Archives, and more. How to Use the Facility

Borrowing Privileges
Non-UCSB Borrowers can buy a library card at the Services Desk during all hours that it is open. Cards are $100 for one year.
Specific documentation is required before privileges are granted. Call the Services Desk to determine exactly what documentation is required to obtain library privileges.
Special Collection Visit Planning Guide
Research Appointments are required and are available Monday through Friday 9AM to 12PM and 1PM to 4PM. Appointments must be scheduled one week in advance via a request made to [library-special@ucsb.edu]. Out of town researchers are encouraged to contact staff at least two weeks ahead of time to arrange for materials.
