The Santa Barbara campus was incorporated into the University of California in 1944. Originally a small teachers' college, the campus now hosts over 1,000 faculty and nearly 22,000 students, with over 200 majors, degrees, and credentials.
The Japanese progam at UCSB started in 1966, while the East Asian Languages and Cultural Studies Department was created in 1994, including Chinese and East Asian Studies as well.
