About the Library:

The IER library holds about 132,350 of Japanese and Chinese books (和漢書 Wakansho) and 210,139 of Western books (洋書 Yō-sho)The Library also holds 12,009 of microfilms and 141,576 of microfiche.  Most of the library's holdings are related to economics and statistics throughout the world.

Parent Facility

The Institute of Economic Research (IER) was founded in 1940 as the Institute of Research on the East Asian Economies at Tokyo University of Commerce. In 1949, the name was changed to Institute of Economic Research. Since its opening, the IER has contributed to the economic research of modern Japan. The following year, 1950, the IER started publishing "The Economic Review."  Lately, its activities have expanded to other Asian countries. 

Today, the IER consists of five research divisions:

  • Theories in Economics and Statistics
  • Economic Measurement and Statistics
  • Comparative and World Economics
  • Economic Institutions and Policy
  • Frontier Sciences in Economics

In addition, the IER has the following affiliated research facilities:

  • Research Centre for Information and Statistics of Social Science (RCISS) 社会科学統計情報センター
  • Center for Economic Institutions (CEI) 経済制度研究センター
  • Center for Intergenerational Studies (CIS) 世代間問題研究機構
  • Research Center for Economic and Social Risks (RSESR) 経済社会リスク研究機構

Using the Library

Prior to the Visit:

  • Please verify the desired material is available by using HERMES.

Upon Arrival:

  • Please fill out Application Form for Non-university Affiliated (学外者利用票 Gakugaisha riyōhyō) at the counter.
  • Please present some form of personal ID.

Photocopy:

  • Photocopy services are provided in accordance with Japanese copyright laws. 
  • The following information materials cannot be copied:
    • Rare books (published before 1850)
    • Broken materials.
  • Microfilms: Please ask the library staff at a counter to use Microfilm reader-printer machine.
  • Copy Fee: 35 yen per sheet
