About the Facility:

The Center for Historical Social Science Literature (CHSSL) separated from the main library in 1978.  CHSSL library holds special collections and rare books in the social science fields (about 75,000 items).

Using the Library

Note:The schedule can be changed. Please ask the rare book librarian by writing  prior to the visit.

Prior to the Visit:

  • The Online Catalog: Please find information materials by using HERMES.

Note: A Letter of Introduction is not required to use the CHSSL Library.

Upon Arrival:

  • Please present some form of personal ID.


  • Photographic are provided in accordance with Japanese copyright laws. 
  • The physical conditions of the originals or donor restrictions may limit photocopying (please ask the library staff).
  • Photocopying the microfilm materials: Please fill out Bunken fukusha mōshikomisho (文献複写申込書), and submit the form at the main library reference counter.
  • Photocopying non microfilm materials: In addition to 文献複写申込書, please fill out Kichō tosho fukusei kyokanegai (貴重図書複写許可願).
  • You are not allowed to use any copying equipment or cameras.
