About the Facility:

The Center for Historical Social Science Literature (CHSSL) separated from the main library in 1978. CHSSL library holds special collections and rare books in the social science fields (about 75,000 items).

This Institutional Repository is a collection of the university's research output: journal articles, research papers, theses and dissertations, department bulletin papers, conference papers and presentations, books, and other academic materials.
HERMES-IR (Special Collections)
The Institutional Repository for Special Collections is a digital archive of Hitotsubashi's collections such as rare books and manuscripts. Examples include the Burt Franklin Collection, banknotes and coins (German Papiermark etc.), pre-World War II Asia in photos, portraits and statues, and more.

The Carl Menger Collection
Collection of approximately 20,000 volumes assembled by Carl Menger, one of the founders of the Austrian school of economics. Includes "Principles of Economics" by Carl Menger, "Physiocratie" by Francois Quesnay, "Traité d'économie politique" by Jean Baptiste Say, "Principles of Political Economy (German edition)" by J.S. Mill, and "Kapital" by Karl Marx.

The Otto Friedrich von Gierke Collection
The private library of Otto Friedrich von Gierke (1841-1921). It comprises approximately 10,800 books, pamphlets and periodicals, and is particularly strong in law and medieval history. Includes "Protestant Ethics and Spirit of Capitalism" by Max Weber, "Spirit of the Laws" by Charles Montesquieu, "Elements of the Philosophy of Right" by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, and "On the Law of War and Peace" by Hugo Grotius.
The Burt Franklin Collection
An extensive collection of over 17,000 books, pamphlets, broadsides, periodicals and manuscripts of the 13th to the 20th centuries, treating of economic, political and social affairs. It includes "Magna Carta", "Medici Family's Accounting book", "An official paper of the French Royal Family", "Archives of the Laubrieres family", "Discourse on the Origin and Basis of Inequality Among Men" by Jean Jacques Rousseau, and many more.
The Kiichiro Soda Collection
This collection of works on the history of philosophy, assembled by Professor Kiichiro Soda (1881-1927). It contains approximately 8,100 books and bound periodicals, and is particularly strong in materials relating to Immanuel Kant. The collection includes "Theory of Moral Sentiments" by Adam Smith, "Metaphysics of Morals" and "Perpetual Peace" by Immanuel Kant, "Principia" (Latin) by Isaac Newton, and many more.
The Bernstein-Souvarine Collection
This collection is composed of books assembled by two Russian refugees in Paris, Leon Bernstein (1877-1962) and Boris Souvarine (1895-1984). It contains approximately 1,900 books on the Russian social movements from 19th century to early 20th century, and includes the works of Chernyshevskii, Herzen, Lenin, Bukharin, Stalin, Trotskii,
General Collection of Rare Books
The General Collection has over 10,000 books publlished prior to 1850 and covers a broad range of disciplines of social science and human science, varying from the sixteenth-century works of More, Erasmus and Bodin to the nineteenth century. Highlights include "Leviathan" by Thomas Hobbes, "Émile" by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, "Contrat social" by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, "Wealth of Nations" by Adam Smith, "An Essay on the Principle of Population" by Thomas Robert Malthus, "An Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals" by David Hume, "Encyclopédie" and "Past and Present" by Thomas Carlyle.

Using the Library

Note:The schedule can be changed. Please ask the rare book librarian by writing prior to the visit.

Prior to the Visit:

The Online Catalog: Please find information materials by using HERMES.

Note: A Letter of Introduction is not required to use the CHSSL Library.

Upon Arrival:

Please present some form of personal ID.

Photocopy:

Photographic are provided in accordance with Japanese copyright laws.

The physical conditions of the originals or donor restrictions may limit photocopying (please ask the library staff).

Photocopying the microfilm materials: Please fill out Bunken fukusha mōshikomisho (文献複写申込書), and submit the form at the main library reference counter.

Photocopying non microfilm materials: In addition to 文献複写申込書, please fill out Kichō tosho fukusei kyokanegai (貴重図書複写許可願).

You are not allowed to use any copying equipment or cameras.
