LibGuides: Comprehensive Digitization and Discoverability Program: Past Awards

Background

The CDDP Task Force focuses primarily on two areas: digitization and discoverability. We aim to support the digitization of hidden collections, the bringing together of complementary online collections, and the creation of better systems for finding relevant digital collections. Further, CDDP supports training initiatives to ensure that Japan scholars and librarians have the tools necessary to bring their collections to light in ways that provide users with the greatest possible depth of understanding. We hope to bring to light hidden, academically useful Japan-related materials through digitization, to enable more robust use of these items by Japan scholars worldwide, to promote collaboration nationally and internationally, to foster training in developing digitization projects, and to help build an international infrastructure for digitized Japan-related materials.

In May of 2021, the CDDP Task Force initiated the CDDP Video Series to showcase exemplary digital projects, resources, and the tools used to build them. With the 2020/21 grant from the Toshiba International Foundation (TIFO), the series aims to assist scholars and librarians in Japanese Studies to engage with digital scholarship under the special circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The NCC-CDDP Award program provides individuals with an opportunity to share their projects using digitized images related to Japanese Studies with a wider community of Japan specialists and expand resources included in the CDDP Video Series. The award(s) of up to $500 will recognize remarkable contributions to digital scholarship in support of Japanese Studies.

2021 CDDP Award Submissions and Awardees

The 2021 NCC-CDDP Award Program has been completed and the respective awards were given to the following videos:

Guidelines for Participation in the 2021 NCC-CDDP Award Program

Eligible Participants

Anyone who is engaged with research and instruction in Japanese Studies can participate in the award program
Each participant, either an individual or a group of individuals, may submit one or more video presentation(s) that introduces his/her/their research project (up to 3)
CDDP Task Force members may not submit their own video presentations independently or as a representative of the project group

Requirements for Video Presentations

Materials presented in the videos must be clear of copyright
Narration audio included in the video presentations must be in either English or Japanese ––in both cases clear, easy to understand English captions/subtitles are required
Length of each video presentation must be about 10 and no more than 20 minutes

Selection Criteria

The award honors remarkable contributions to digital scholarship using digitized images in support of Japanese Studies
In keeping with the aim of the CDDP Video Series, videos introducing not just project content but also the tools used to build them are looked upon favorably
Collaborative work (e.g., involving librarians and students) exemplifying creativity and/or innovative scholarship are highly evaluated
Research examples showcasing resource(s) and tool(s) introduced in CDDP Video Series are welcome
Videos are also evaluated on the organization, clarity and visual appeal of the content
