[ARCHIVED] Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery: Welcome

Guides to locating and requesting Japanese books and articles held elsewhere, including libraries in Japan.

What we do?

Academic libraries cooperate with one another to provide research materials for their patrons, which is called Interlibrary Loan (ILL) and/or Document Delivery (DD) service.

We help with ILL/DD for Japanese-language materials from libraries in Japan.

(An individual researcher MUST contact his/her affiliated library for ILL/DD services)

Our activities

We help ILL specialists to locate/borrow Japanese materials from Japan.

ILL/DD with Japan: Option 1, with NDL

A registered individual can request a copy directly to NDL. But, ILL requests MUST be made by libraries to NDL. For detailed instructions for a library to register and submit ILL/DD requests to NDL, please consult with ILL/DD from NDL page.

<NEWS 1/8/18> NDL Online has begun as of January 5, 2018. Please check Help page for additional information on how to use NDL Online. Registered libraries for photocopy and ILL services (separate registration is required for photocopy and ILL services) can directly submit requests in NDL Online. For passwords set in 2017 or earlier, use UPPERCASE only--for more information about passwords, please read the News page.

Please see also the latest presentation of ILL/DD services from NDL below:

ILL/DD with Japan: Option 3, with GIF Project

(An individual researcher MUST contact his/her affiliated library for ILL/DD services through the Global ILL Framework (GIF)

[IMPORTANT] GIF Project for photocopy service is ending in March 2018 (ILL service with GIF has ended as of 1/19/2018).
Please keep checking the News page for the details.

GIF GIF Global ILL Framework (GIF) is an International ILL program established between OCLC ILL libraries (North American, Australian, and New Zealand academic libraries) and Japanese academic libraries. GIF was originally launched in May 2002 by the Japan Project, organized by the Association of American Universities, Association of Research Libraries, and the NCC. GIF uses the ISO ILL protocol to transfer requests data between North America (OCLC) and Japan (NACSIS-ILL). Currently, 170 libraries from Japan, 115 libraries from North America, and three libraries from Australia/New Zealand participate in GIF project.

OCLC ILL libraries in North America, Australia, and New Zealand must join the OCLC GIF-J (ISO) Group to participate in the program. Registration is free. GIF uses OCLC IFM. Use CiNii (pronounced "sigh-knee"), a Japanese database, to search academic articles and books and find holing libraries. Click here for the instruction of using CiNii Books.
