Founded in 1740 by Benjamin Franklin, the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) is one of the foremost research institutions in the nation.

East Asian courses began in the 18th century under the title of the Orient. Lanugage courses are taught in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cantonese, Taiwanese, Vietnamese, and Thai.
