About the museum:
Founded in 1913 by Emily Sibley Watson, the Memorial Art Gallery's permanent collections began with the donation of a lappet of lace. Its permanent collection, containing artworks from over a 5,000-year span, has been heralded as the best balanced collection in the state outside of New York City.
For more information concerning the Japanese collections, please contact Nancy Norwood at (585) 276-8979 or by email.
Collection size: as of December 2014
The Memorial Art Gallery has a permanent collection of approximately 12,000 items, with approximately 2,000 Asian pieces and 500 items in the Japanese collection specifically.
The Japanese collection is strongest in ukiyo-e and 19th century prints.
