The original library, established in 1914, was moved to the main library location on the Vancouver campus in 1925. The first additional library space was added in 1948, with the rest following during the latter half of the 20th and beginning of the 21st century. As of 2000, the UBC library system claims the largest collection of Asian language materials in Canada.
Established as one of the five regional centers under the Institute of Asian Research, the CJR promotes research on a wide variety of Japan-related topics. The CJR also presents a series of seminars hosted by both visitors to the CJR and University of British Columbia faculty members.
The Institute of Asian Research recently launched the second phase of this program, entitled "Understanding Coordinated Compliance with International Trade and Human Rights Standards in Comparative Perspectives." This second phase supports a fully integrated program of research, student training, knowledge transfer activities, publications, and more. Further information can be found at the link above.
The intensive, 11-month program for teacher candidates, located on the main Vancouver campus, offers a secondary school specialization, which prepare the students methodologically to teach one or two subject specializations, including Japanese. A Bachelor's in the Cultural Studies department on the Okanagan campus combines courses from both the Humanities and Social Sciences departments. The program focuses on popular culture in North America, but can also include Japanese culture.

Self-service photocopying and printing is available with a UBC Guest Card photocopy/printing card, which can be obtained at a card machine at any of the branch libraries or circulation desks.
The price of a photocopy or printed page is 7¢ for black and white, or 40¢ for color. A page is defined by the university as one side of a 8.5" x 11" sheet of paper.
