Ritsumeikan University (立命館大学 Ritsumeikan daigaku) dates back to 1869 when Prince Saionji Kinmochi (西園寺公望) founded a private school, however the school lasted less than a year. In 1900, Nakagawa Kojurō (中川小十郎), Prince Saioji’s former secretary, opened Kyoto Hōsei Gakkō (京都法政学校), a law school. In 1922, the school was chartered, becoming Ritsumeikan University.
Today, Ritsumeikan University has 15 faculties, and 19 graduate schools. The university has 3 campuses: Kinugasa Campus in Kyoto, Biwako-Kusatsu Campus (BKC) in Shiga, and Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) and international campus in Oita prefecture.
