About the Shinagawa Library:

The Shinagawa library was completed in 2004.  The library uniquely combines its conventional library with a state of the art IT system. The library accommodates a combined total of 586,000 books and more than 600 computer terminals, which are used for lectures (distant learning) and as  open terminals for students .

The library consists of three basement floors with the stack room, the reading room and the reference counter, and three-story floors with the main counter, computer facilities and the group reading room.

Notable Collection(s):

  • Nichiren Shōnin rare materials (日蓮聖人 貴重資料):  Nichiren Shōnin (1222-1282, the Kamakura period) is a founder of Nichiren sect. The collection include Risshō ankokuron (立正安国論) and Kaimokushō (開目抄).

Note: The Guide uses the ALA/LC standard romanization, however, it also reflects a different romanization system used by an individual institution or collection.

Using the Library

Prior to the Visit: Advance Inquiry and Preparation Required

        For affiliates from other universities:

  • Please verify the desired material is available by using their OPAC.
  • Please ask the home institution library to contact the library by e-mail to verify the desired material is available when you plan to visit:

  • Letter of Introduction (紹介状 Shōkaijō) from the home institution library (please use the following form if the home institution does not have one):

         For general public users: No Advance Inquiry and
         Preparation Required (access will be limited).

Note: If you want to have access to rare materials, using procedure for affiliates from other universities is recommended, otherwise some rare materials cannot be accessed on the day you visit.  Please ask the library staff if you are visiting the library as a general public user and want to access to these materials.

Upon Arrival:

  • At the Main Counter located on the first floor:
    • Please present the letter of Introduction and the library material request form
    • Please present some form of personal ID
    • Please obtain "利用カード" in order to use the library.

Photocopy:

  • Photocopy services are provided in accordance with Japanese copyright laws.
  • Copy Fee:
    • Black: 10 yen
    • Color: 30 yen

Borrowing:

  • Eligible for Rissho University Affiliates and 仏教図書館協会東地区相互利用 members.
  • Up to 6 books for 21 days

Note: 仏教図書館協会東地区相互利用Buddhism Library Association East District Mutual Use(?), available for Buddhism Library Association East District schools:Toyo Komazawa Rissho Taisho Shukutoku Tsurumi and Minobusan University.

Graduate students, university faculty members and researchers in the Buddhism and Indian philosophy from the participant institutions can use other members' libraries.

Accessing Closed Stack

  • Please fill out Shiryō sheikyūhyō (資料請求票) and submit it to the main counter.

Accessing Rare Materials

Accessing to the Nichiren Related Materials:

Prior to the visit:

  • Please verify the desired material is available by using the following catalogs:
    • 『補訂版 国書総目録』岩波書店
    • 『仏書解説大辞典』大東出版社
    • 『日蓮宗宗学章疏目録』東方出版
  • Please ask the home institution library to contact the library by e-mail to verify the desired material is available at least 2 days prior to your visit:
