The Institute for Gender Studies (IGS) was founded in 1996; however, the origin of the IGS dates back to 1975 when the archive of women’s studies was established. The archive was involved in collecting resources and research on related fields. In 1986, the archive of women’s studies was reconstructed as the Institute for Women’s Studies, which was more geared towards academic research and educational activities.
In 2003, the institute launched “Frontiers of Gender Studies,” part of the 21st century Center of Excellence (COE) program funded by the Japanese government. Under the Institute's three related graduate studies programs, new postgraduate courses specializing in gender studies in social sciences were created.
In addition, IGS maintains an high international profile by inviting international scholars, and collaborating on research projects. IGS also holds international symposia and public seminars, publishing it’s research outcomes and seminar presentations via its "Journal of Gender Studies," an annual journal.
