About the Main Library:

The Main Library was built on the Aoyama Campus in 1977.  The library uses an open stacks system and holds 1,198,987 books (as of 2010).

Collection Size: 1,198,987 volumes

Notable Collection:

  • Edo gesaku shiryō (江戸戯作資料): Rare documents related to popular literature in the Edo period.  Many of them were not included in Kokusho
  • Sōmokuroku (国書総目録): an important Japanese index listing books published in Japan or written by Japanese prior to 1867.

Note: The Guide uses the ALA/LC standard romanization, however, it also reflects a different romanization system used by an individual institution or collection.

How to Use the Facility

Using the Library

Prior to the Visit:

  • Please verify the desired material is available by using AURORA-OPAC.
  • Letter of Introduction (紹介状 Shōkaijō) from your home institution library. Please use the following form if the home institution does not have one:
    • A letter of Introduction (Word,  PDF)
  • Library materials request form (図書閲覧願 Tosho etsuran negai ) from your home institution. Please use the following form if the home institution does not have one by fax or phone:
    • Library Materials Request Form (Word,  PDF)

Upon Arrival:

  • Please present the letter of Introduction and some form of personal ID.

Photocopy:

  • Photocopy services are provided in accordance with Japanese copyright laws.
  • Copy machines are located on each floor.
  • Copy Fee:
    • Black: 10 yen per sheet
    • Color: 40 yen per sheet
