About the Archives:

Archives of Modern Japanese Music was opened in May 2011 as an archive affiliated with Meiji Gakuin University, however the origin of the archive dates back to 1966 when Kazuyuki Toyama, a professor of Fine Arts and Music at Tokyo National University founded the Library of Toyama Music foundation, which became the Documentation Center of the Toyama Music Foundation in 1987. In 2010, Professor Toyama entrusted its ownership to Meiji Gakuin University. The university professor, Ryuichi Higuchi, a member of both the International Association of Music Libraries, Archives (IAML) and Documentation Centres, and Répertoire International des Sources Musicales (International Inventory of Musical Sources, or RISM), took the initiative to open the new Centre within the University Library of Meiji Gakuin. In May 2011 the facility completed its move and reopened in the Meiji University Gakuin Library.

The archives holds about 500,000 items of music-related documents.
