About the Archives:

Founded in 1998, Meiji Gakuin Archives of History (明治学院歴史資料館) introduces the university's historical material as well as important figures who contributed to the development of Meiji Gakuin University, such as J.C. Hepburn (founder), S.R. Brown, and Shimazaki Tōson, the influential poet in the Meji period.  The archives celebrates the university's 150 anniversary (in 2013).

Notable Collection(s): 歴史資料館展示室: This section displays historical Documents of Meiji Gakuin University important figures materials:

  • J.C. Hepburn (ヘボン): Display the original "Waei Gorin Shūsei, first edition (和英語林集成 初版) (1867),"  "Seisho jiten, first edition (聖書辞典 初版)     (1892)"
  • S.R. Brown (ブラウン): Display a copy of Colloquial Japanese, or, conversational sentences and dialogues in English and Japanese, together with an English-Japanese index to serve as a vocabulary, and an introduction on the grammatical structure of the language (1863) 
  • Guido Herman Fridolin Verbeck (フルベッキ): "基督教に関する誤解を辯ず, the third edition (Correcting misinterpretation about Christianity)"
  • Others: Kagawa Toyohiko (賀川 豊彦), Shimazaki Tōson (島崎藤村), Ibuka Kajinosuke (井深 梶之助), etc.

Note: The Guide uses the ALA/LC standard romanization, however, it also reflects a different romanization system used by an individual institution or collection.
