Dear All,

First, I would like to acknowledge all the hard work everyone is doing to adjust to the COVID-19 crisis by assisting with the move to online materials and coursework. Although I realize everyone is SUPER busy, I am writing to announce that we have posted 5 fabulous virtual presentations of the North American Coordinating Council on Japanese Library Resources (NCC) Annual Meeting on the NCC Website https://guides.nccjapan.org/2020openmeeting

Since our 25th anniversary celebration, NCC has been gathering feedback from our various constituencies, and we have created several new initiatives. At our Virtual Open Meeting, we will provide updates on our new initiatives and programs, including the Comprehensive Digitization and Discoverability Program (NCC-CDDP) and Outreach Working Group (OWG). For those of you who are eager to view all of the presentations at once, the presentations are available by following the links below. However, because everyone is so busy at the moment, I plan to send out a series of reminders for those who may have missed the opportunity of viewing these presentations the first or even second time around.

Agenda:

NCC Updates and Initiatives

Tara McGowan (NCC Executive Director, Princeton University)

Report of NCC Outreach Group Survey

Tsuyoshi Harada (Japanese Studies Librarian, University of Iowa)

Kana Jenkins (Curator, University of Maryland)

Report of NCC Comprehensive Digitization and Discoverability Program (CDDP) Survey

Regan Murphy Kao (Japanese Studies Librarian, Stanford University)

Opening the Black Box: A behind the scenes look at the digitization of the University of Illinois' Hōrai no makimono

Steve W. Witt (Director of Global Studies, Head of the International and Area Studies Library, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign)

Making a Resource More Usable after Digitization: The case of Kadenshū Manuscripts Held by the C. V. Starr East Asian Library, University of California, Berkeley

Toshie Marra (Librarian for Japanese Collection, University of California, Berkeley)

Technical note:

With the exception of Steve Witt’s video and Tara McGowan’s zoom presentation, the presentations are PowerPoint with voice narration.  You will need to download and use slide-show functions to view them. Also, if you have difficulty viewing Steve’s presentation, please make sure to clear cookies in your viewing browser.

Q & A:

Please send your questions via email directly to individual presenters or to me haruko.nakamura@yale.edu. With your permission, we will post the Q & A for each of the presentations on the NCC Website.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Haruko
