Appointment of Mitsutaka Nakamura as Chair of the Image Use Protocol (IUP) Working Group

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Mitsutaka Nakamura as the new Chair of the Image Use Protocol Working Group, effective April 1, 2024.

Mitsu is the Japan Studies Librarian at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa. Prior to that, he worked as the Japanese and Korean Studies Librarian at the East Asian Library at Washington University in St. Louis (209-2023) and as Bibliographic Assistant, Japanese Acquisitions at C.V. Starr East Asian Library at Columbia University (2018-2019).

The Image Use Protocol Task Force was established in 2007 in response to requests from US faculty and graduate students for guidelines of locating, accessing and obtaining permission to use visual images from Japan in teaching, research and publications. The bilingual templates created by the dedicated members of the task force have been instrumental in helping individuals to secure permissions for the use of Japanese images in publications. Up to this date, it is one of the most visited pages of the NCC.

In his candidacy statement, Mitsu highlighted how through his daily duties as Japan Studies Librarian, he receives inquiries about image use permissions – both still and moving, as well as how he appreciates the collective wisdom and collaboration in better navigating the complexities regarding image use permissions to fulfill a wide range of requests.
