Founded in 1861, the University of Washington is a public university with a heavy emphasis on research. In fiscal year 2013, UW received $1.238 billion in sponsored research funds.

With its first campus in Seattle, UW gained two more campuses, in Tacoma and Bothell, founded in 1990.

• The University of Washington employs 30 academic faculty and staff in Japan-related positions.
