About National Institute of Informatics:

National Institute of Informatics (NII) is a unique institution serving as Japan's principal bibliographic utility, as the creator and provider of huge quantities on online data and links, and as an academic research institution.  NII in its present form was founded in 2000, having evolved since the early 1970s through various national scale efforts in Japan to bring academic information into the digital age.  It became the National Center for Science Information Systems in 1986. Today NII is both a leader in research in the information-related fields, including networking, software, and content, and Japan's major bibliographic utility.

NII is an inter-university research institute that focuses on joint efforts with other universities and research institutions throughout Japan. Through its affiliation with the Graduate University for Advanced Studies (GRIPS) NII offers 3 and 5 year multi-disciplinary PhDs in fields related to Informatics.  Its programs also attract a significant number of foreign researchers and foreign PhD students.

NII has an extensive English language site explaining its services.  For a guide to their bibliographic services especially the newer CiNII Books please visit NCC's Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery site.
