Founded in 1823 as the Brooklyn Apprentices' Library, the institution would go through several name and location changes before becoming the Brooklyn Museum in the 1970s, when the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, and the Brooklyn Children's Museum separated into independent entities.
Although the original 1893 plan for the Museum was never fully realized, the Brooklyn Museum is still one of the largest museums in the world. It can be found in what was once designated the Brooklyn Institute Triangle, just outside Prospect Park.
