First floor: the material culture of Ainu and Ryukyu
Second floor: Japanese Art from Jomon to the Edo period, including ceramics, swords, lacquer wares, sculptures, and modern decorative arts

Archaeological materials, and special exhibits

Over 300 valuable Buddhist treasures, mainly from the 7th to 8th century, which were donated to the Imperial Household by Horyuji Temple in 1878.

Kuromon (黒門): Kuromon is an important cultural property, which was built in probably the late Edo period or 19th century.
Azekura Repository (あぜくら宝蔵): The repository is an important cultural property, which was built in the Kamakura period to store a Buddhist sutra. It was transferred from the Jurinin Temple within the Gangoji Temple compound in Nara in May, 1882.

Also called eMuseum, eKokuhou provides high definition images of national treasures and important cultural properties owned by four national museums (Tokyo National Museum, Kyoto National Museum, Nara National Museum and Kyushu National Museum). In addition, descriptions are available in English, French, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese.

Items are browsed by type such as paintings, calligraphy, sculpture, decorative arts, and archaeology. In addition, "Current Display" browses items that are showing at the museum. Items can be searched by artist, region, and other criteria.

Online archives of old maps of Japan, including the entire country, regions, and cities. Also some maps of foreign lands are available. They can be browsed by area, listed from north to south. Please click "検索画面から条件を入れて探す" for keyword search. When using the search box, alphabetized words do not seem to work.

Online archives of photographic images from the end of the Edo to the Taisho period. They are browsed by location, title, and photographer. Search box is also available. Please click "検索画面から条件を入れて探す" for keyword search.

Visual Archive of Natural History Bibliotheca contains images plants and animals, including Kappa, created from the Edo to Meiji period. They are browsed by subject. Please click "検索画面から条件を入れて探す" for keyword search.
