Research Access Guide for the Peabody Essex Museum.

Overview

About the Peabody Essex Museum:

Founded in 1799 by a provision in the charter of the East India Marine Society of Salem, the Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) is located just north of the capital city of Boston. The original collection of PEM was brought together by members of this society, who were captains and supercargoes who donated items they had found all over the world.

The museum was expanded in 2003 with a glass-and-brick addition designed by Moshe Safdie. More information on Safdie can be found here.
