About the Archives:

The NIDS military archive collection includes the documents taken back from the United States, those kept at the Bureau of Repatriation of the Ministry of Health and Welfare following the war, and other documents gathered by the NIDS itself. The NIDS military archives holds 58,000 volumes of documents related to the Imperial Army and the 36,000 volumes related to the Imperial Navy.

How to Use the Facility

Using the Archives

Prior to the visit:

  • Inquiry: please contact the reference office by mail (neither e-mail or fax is accepted)
  • Enclose return postage: please use International Postage Coupons for outside Japan, otherwise an 80 yen stamp

Upon Arrival:

  • Regulations for using the Military Archives (Japanese )" is available at the reception desk.
  • Please visit the guard’s office first for the admission to the Military Archives.  The office is located on the left-hand side after the main gate.
  • Entrance is limited to the Military Archives.
