Opened in 1876, the Museum of Fine Arts was originally located in Copley Plaza in Boston, with a total collection size of approximately 5,600 items. By 1909 the collection had expanded to such a degree that the museum relocated to its current location on Huntington Avenue.
Over the past century, the collection has increased to approximately 450,000 works of art, making the Museum of Fine Arts one of the most comprehensives art museums in the world. Significant renovations since 2010 are ongoing, including a new wing, and renovated spaces for contemporary, European, Asian, and African art, as well as other significant changes.
