In response to the challenges and obstacles created by the COVID-19 pandemic and the increasing importance of digital tools for access to Japanese material, NCC’s Comprehensive Digitization and Discoverability Program Task Force (CDDP) is collaborating with institutions and scholars to release a video series highlighting digital resources for teaching, learning, and research. Created with funding support from Toshiba International Foundation (TIFO), the CDDP Video Series offers instructional videos on freely available resources and cutting-edge projects related to Japanese Studies, highlighting useful tools and best practices. If you are interested in submitting a video to the series, please contact CDDP via our form. To view the full list of videos presently available, click here.

How do you enable students to imagine the process of physically writing classical kana calligraphy in premodern Japanese texts? The digital medium affords new possibilities for remote learning from smart phone applications. X. Jie Yang (University of Calgary) has developed an exciting website and learning tool, 100 Classical Kana Words in Motion, which enables users to dive into the kana writing process.

In the 100 Classical Kana Words in Motion video hosted in collaboration with NCC’s Comprehensive Digitization and Discoverability Program Task Force (CDDP), Dr. Yang guides viewers through the goals, function, and even building of his webpage and smartphone app for classical Japanese learning, with special attention to the tool Glide for app development.

You can check out this and our other CDDP videos on the NCC site!
