Announcement of New Social Science Faculty Representative on the NCC Council--Dr. Dennis Frost

NCC is pleased to announce that Dr. Dennis Frost will be joining the NCC Council as our new Social Science Faculty Representative from July 1, 2020, until June 30, 2023.  Dr. Frost is the Wen Chao Chen Associate Professor of East Asian Social Sciences at Kalamazoo College. He also serves as the Director of East Asian Studies and the Chair of the History Department. Dr. Frost’s recent research has sought to the bridge the gaps between Japanese studies, sports studies, and disability studies by examining the impact of the Paralympic Movement and disability sports on Japanese society from the 1960s to the present. His next project is a study of the life and work of Japanese disability advocate Dr. Nakamura Yutaka, including his extensive international work in the medical field of rehabilitation. 

Dr. Frost has been deeply involved in working with library staff at Kalamazoo College to create a First-Year Seminar Library Research Workshop called “Beyond Google.” He also initiated work with the librarians on developing a “Beyond Google II” workshop appropriate to the sophomore level, while also encouraging faculty who were developing new seminars to incorporate some form of information literacy activities. As an NCC Council Member, he brings a valuable perspective as a faculty member who has maintained an active scholarly agenda focused on Japan without having ready access to materials on his own campus. 

NCC would also like to take this opportunity to thank our outgoing Social Science Faculty Representative, Dr. Sabine Fruhstuck,  Professor of East Asian and Cultural Studies and Director of East Asian Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. We appreciate her many contributions over the past 3 years and look forward to her continued involvement with NCC in other capacities going forward.
