Founded in 1701, Yale is named after a merchant who donated money and a small library in 1718. Although it has been greatly expanded, Yale has been located on the same campus since its founding.  Teaching of East Asia at Yale dates to the mid-19th century and Yale has one of the strongest East Asian collections in North America.
