Founded in 1856 as the Maryland Agricultural College, it gained university status in 1920 with the consolidation of the Baltimore County and College Park campuses.
Japanese is taught as part of the East Asian Languages and Cultures department, which exists within the School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures. The East Asian Collection, established in 1965, is housed in the Theodore R. McKeldin Library on the College Park campus.
