Founded in 1847, the University of Iowa began less than two months after Iowa was admitted to the Union as a state.

The University Libraries began in 1855 with the donation of 50 books, and officially opened two years later.

Undergraduate Studies

• A B.A. in Japanese Language and Literature is offered by the Department of Asian Languages and Literature.

Other Academic Information

• The University of Iowa employs nine faculty and academic staff in Japan-related positions.
