Cultural Organizations in Japanese Studies

International House of Japan 財団法人国際文化会館
Nonprofit organization that promotes Japan's cultural and intellectual exchange with other countries. IHJ's library has a major English-language collection and is an excellent source for advice on research institutions in Japan.
CULCON US-Japan Conference on Cultural and Educational Interchange 日米文化教育交流会議
A binational advisory panel to build strong cultural and educational foundations of the US-Japan relationship. Originally created by President John F. Kennedy and Prime Minister Ikeda Hayato.
Japan Foundation 国際交流基金
Established in 1972, the Japan Foundation is the nation's first organization specializing in international cultural exchange under the jurisdiction of the Foreign Ministry of Japan.
Japan-United States Friendship Commission (JUSFC) 日米友好基金
Independent federal agency of the US government supporting US Japan understanding through education, policy study and preforming arts exchange.
United States-Japan Foundation 米日財団
Private grant-making organization that supports a variety of US-Japan policy-related studies, also supports K-12 outreach on Japan.
Toshiba International Foundation 東芝国際交流財団
Nonprofit grant-making organization that supports non-profit organizations' activities in promoting Japanese studies, research, and language study.
Japan Foundation Global Partnerships Program
Formerly Japan Foundation for Global Partnership (CGP). Rebranded in 2022, the Global Partnerships Program promotes US-Japan collaboration to fulfill shared global responsibilities and to enhance dialogue and interchange between Japanese and US citizens to improve bilateral relations.
The Japan Society
An independent body based in the UK which is dedicated to the enhancement of the British-Japanese relationship. It supports educational exchanges between Britain and Japan for the study of Britain and its culture by Japanese people.
The Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation
The Foundation aims to develop good relations between Japan and the UK. It seeks to promote mutual understanding and cooperation through financial support for activities in various fields.
Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation
The Foundation fosters UK-Japan relations in Britain, offering a wide programme of lectures, seminars, book launches, courses, exhibitions, as well as a scholarship program and grants.

A Partial List of Potential Grant Sources for Scholars to Study in Japan

Fulbright Scholar Program
This program provides grants to American faculty members, scholars, and professionals who lecture and/or conduct research abroad for up to a year.
Japanese Studies Fellowship
Grants provided by the Japan Foundation for scholars in the humanities and social sciences fields to conduct research in Japan
Fellowship for Advanced Social Science Research on Japan
This program is a joint activity of Japan-US Friendship Commission and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Grants are provided to scholars who are going to conduct research on modern Japanese society and political economy, Japan’s international relations, and US-Japan relations.
NEAC
The Northeast Asia Council of the AAS offers small individual grants for completion of a research project.
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS)
JSPS provides grants to researchers in the science fields (natural and social sciences) who are interested in conducting research in Japan.
Abe Fellowships
This program is for researchers who are interested in conducting international multidisciplinary research on topics of pressing global concern.
Kokugakuin University Visiting Researcher Program (Japanese)
This program helps foreign scholars in Japanese studies field who are planning to conduct research at Kokugakuin University.
BAJS Funding and Prizes
Several funding schemes that are administrated by the British Association for Japanese Studies.
EAJS/TIFO Scholarships
A travel grant offered by the Toshiba International Foundation and administrated by the European Association for Japanese Studies.
EAJS PhD workshops
The annual workshop for doctoral students which aims to create a European multidisciplinary network of advanced graduates and senior scholars in Japanese studies.
Sasakawa Foundation Funding Scheme
A number of awards to support activities/projects in science & technology, medicine & health, environment & social issues, Japanese studies, and in the Japanese language.
Canon Foundation Research Fellowship
15 Fellowships granted annually by the Foundation to highly qualified European and Japanese researchers in all fields.
JSPS Summer Programme
A program for current British MPhil or PhD students sponsored by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science together with the British Council.
Daiwa Foundation Grants
Grants and prizes awarded by the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation. A number of scholarship are also awarded annually (see https://dajf.org.uk/scholarships/daiwa-scholarship). Citizenship requirements may apply.

Japan Library Group
UK-based association which aim to pool experience and resources in the development of holdings of Japanese language materials and to foster communication between librarians and academics. It also supervises the Japanese Union Catalogue projects and The Tenri Antiquarian Materials Workshops.
European Association for Japanese Studies
The leading association of scholars and researchers working on Japan in Europe. It promotes learning events such as conferences and workshops about Japanese Language and Culture.
European Association of Japanese Resource Specialists
A European-wide association of librarians, archivists, and researchers working with Japanese resources.

British Association for Japanese Studies
The Association was formed in 1974, with the 'aim to encourage Japanese studies in the UK, in particular by stimulating teaching and research'.
Société française des études japonaises (French)
French Society for Japanese Studies
The largest academic association for Japanese studies in France. Organizes conferences and publishes information about Japanese Studies in France.
Gesellschaft für Japanforschung (German)
An organization for the scientific debate on Japan and as an interest group for Japan-related research in the German-speaking area.
European Center for Japanese Studies of Alsace (Centre Européen d’Etudes Japonaises d’Alsace)
CEEJA develops:- innovative cultural projects in Europe and contributes to the dissemination of Japanese culture in Alsace through numerous events, highlighting in particular our art collections, manga museum, and the Europe-Japan Academic Club.
