About Princeton University:

Founded in 1746 as the College of New Jersey, it was moved to Princeton in 1756 and renamed Princeton University in 1896 when the college gained university status.

East Asian Studies began being taught in the Department of Oriental Languages and Literatures in 1927. Japanese language was first taught in 1960, when the first Japan-focused professor was hired at Princeton. The Department of Oriental Languages and Literatures became the Department of East Asian Studies and the Department of Near Eastern Studies in 1969.
