The Miyagi prefectural library was opened in 1881. 

Collection Size (As of 2016): 

• Books: 1,073,478 volumes

• Audio-visual materials: 50,634 items

• Information resources related to the Great East Japan Earthquake: 5,171 items

Notable Collection(s):

• Research materials related to the Children's literature

• Documentations and records related to Miyagi Prefecture, including Date bunko (伊達文庫), documents of the Date family, which ruled Sendai han territory (仙台藩領 Sendai han).

• Information resources related to the Authors from Miyagi Prefecture.
