About Shochiku Otani Library:

Shōchiku Ōtani Library was founded in 1956, a year after Ōtani Takejirō, one of the founder of Shōchiku Company, Limited, was awarded the Order of Culture 文化勲章 (Bunka kunshō).  The Library specializes in materials related to Theater and Movies.  In 2011, the library became a Public Interest Incorporated Foundation.

Shōchiku Ōtani Library currently holds 420,000 materials including scripts, documents, magazines, photo collections, and posters from plays, film, and television.

Collection Size: 

• 420,000 materials 

Focus: Performing Arts

Notable Collection(s):

• Jōruri Seihon (浄瑠璃正本): Original Jōruri script (about 300 years old)

• In addition, the library holds rare theater scripts and movie scenarios that are not on the market.

Using the Library

Open to the Public

Admission:

• Admission Fees: Free

Upon Arrival:

• Please present some form of personal ID for viewing special collections.

• Card Catalog for materials acquired until 2003 (some available on the database)

• Database for materials acquired after 2004 is avaialble on-site.

Photocopy:

• Photocopy services are provided in accordance with Japanese copyright laws.

• Copy Fee:

• A4: 50 yen

• B4: 100 yen

• For a large volume of photocopy, please pick up next day or will be mailed at your own expense.
