About the Museum:
The Kyoto International Manga Museum (MM) was opened in 2006 as the first manga culture center in Japan. Since its opening, MM has been collecting, preserving, and presenting manga related materials. MM also serves as a research facility for scholars who are studying manga culture in Japan as well as other countries.
MM is jointly operated by the city of Kyoto and Kyoto Seika University (KSU). KSU's fine arts department started offering cartoon courses in 1973, followed by the establishment of the Department of Cartoon & Comic Art in the Faculty of Arts in 2000. The following year, the Manga Culture Research Institute was established, and the Manga faculty was created in 2006. MM is also the manga culture research center for KSU.
Currently, MM holds a total of about 300,000 items: 250,000 items in the archives, and 50,000 items in the Wall of Manga section (manga from 1970's to present).
Collection Size: 300,000 volumes
Notable Collection(s):
Manga Expo: About 5,300 manga publications from North America, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Spain, South Korea, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Thailand as well as Japanese manga translated into different languages.
