Hoover Institution: Institution Main

Overview

About the Hoover Institution:

Originally founded in 1919 as the Hoover War Collections, it became the Hoover Institution in 1959 when Herbert Hoover set the institution's purpose and scope in a statement read before the Stanford University Board of Trustees. The Hoover War Collections were originally donated to Stanford University, and the Hoover Institution continues to be located on the Stanford campus. For more information concerning Stanford University's Japanese and Japan-related collections, please visit our Stanford University guide.

The original purpose of the War Collections, to document the history of World War I, has been expanded for the institution based on the principles of individual, economic, and political freedom.
