In response to the challenges and obstacles created by the COVID-19 pandemic and the increasing importance of digital tools for access to Japanese material, NCC’s Comprehensive Digitization and Discoverability Program Task Force (CDDP) is collaborating with institutions and scholars to release a video series highlighting digital resources for teaching, learning, and research. Created with funding support from Toshiba International Foundation (TIFO), the CDDP Video Series offers instructional videos on freely available resources and cutting-edge projects related to Japanese Studies, highlighting useful tools and best practices. If you are interested in submitting a video to the series, please contact CDDP via our form. To view the full list of videos presently available, click here.

Have you ever thought about creating your own custom database for your research? In the latest contribution to our Comprehensive Digitization and Discoverability Program Video Series, Risako Hirano, a Ph.D. Student at Ritsumeikan University, introduces the “My Database” feature within the Ritsumeikan's Art Research Center's (ARC) portal databases. This platform allows you to build a database tailored to your individual research needs using materials from the ARC portal databases or your own materials. This helpful guide to building custom databases introduces the contents and functionality of ARC while using Hirano’s own research on modern Japanese stained glass to demonstrate possible research outcomes. The video also offers instructions on how you can apply for International Joint Research to Utilize the ARC's Database System to create your own databases.

If you have a digital tool or project of your own that you want to share with the Japan Studies community, don’t forget that the 2022-23 NCC-CDDP Award Program, which offers prizes of up to $500 for instructional videos, has an application deadline of January 31, 2023! For details of the program, please visit our webpage.
