About the Yokohama Archives of History:

The Yokohama Archives of History was opened in June, 1981. The Archives  preserves and exhibits historical materials from the Edo period to the Taisho-Showa era  A visit to the Archives provides a unique opportunity to know Yokohama's role as an entrance door to Japan and a prominent city for international trades.

The archives holds about 250,000 items related to the history of Yokohama, including documents and records, newspapers and magazines, photos, and ukiyo-e.  Besides permanent exhibitions, the archives holds special exhibitions four times a year in the Special Exhibition Room.

  • Copy Fee:
    • Black: 20 yen
    • Color: 100 yen
  • The following materials cannot be photo copied.  Please ask staff for microfilms or using a digital camera:
    • The original docmentations and records
    • Books and magazines which were published in 1912 or earlier
    • Western Books that were published in 1945 or earlier (for the Don Brown collection, 1952 or earlier) 
    • The original newspaper and pictorial materials
