About the Library:

The Supreme Court Library provides case-related materials to subsidiary courts throughout Japan.  The library also serves as the branch library of the National Diet Library and provides legal information. 

The library holds 16,000 Japanese and 10,000 Western items related to regulations, case studies, instructions, reports, and magazines in law and related fields.

Collection Size: 270,000 volumes

  • Japanese: 170,000 volumes
  • Non Japanese: 100,000 volumes

Note: The Guide uses the ALA/LC standard romanization, however, it also reflects a different romanization system used by an individual institution or collection.

How to Use the Facility

Using the Library

Prior to the visit (For the first visit): Advance Inquiry and Preparation Required

  • Please verify the desired material is available by using their OPAC
  • Please call the library at least one day before your visit (by 4:30 pm):  +81-3-3264-8111 (ext. 5137)
  • Library use request form: Please fill out Saikō saibanjo toshokan riyō shinseisho 最高裁判所図書館利用申請書(PDF).

Upon Arrival:

For the first time and one time visit:

  • Please enter from the West gate for security inspection.
  • Please present your photo ID.

For multiple visits:

  • User Pass: Please bring a photo (3.0cm X2.0 cm, front, no hats, upper body), which was taken within 3 months of your visit.

Photocopy:

  • Photocopy services are provided in accordance with Japanese copyright laws.
  •  Please ask library staff (by 4:30 pm).
