About the Library:

The Kyoto Institute Library and Archives opened in 2017 with the mandate to collect, preserve, and provide access to Kyoto related materials. It acquired 1 million items (books and archival material) related to Kyoto, from the Kyoto Prefectural Library and Archives (which operated 1963-2016). It also became the second institution in Japan where users can view the 50,000 digitized items from Yomei bunko (陽明文庫).

Summary of Collection(s)

Collection Size (As of April 2017):

  • Books: 200,000 volumes
  • Journals: 2,000 items
  • Archival material (including government documents and photographic records): 830,000 items

Focus: Kyoto History, Culture, Industry, Lifestyle, Contemporary Literature, Arts and Crafts

Notable collection(s):

  • Tōji hyakugō monjo (東寺百合文書): a national treasure, compiled in 1685 by Goto Enjo and others. The collection includes documentations of historically significant events such as an edict of "virtuous government" (永仁の徳政令 Ēnin no tokusei rei ) in 1297.
  • Kawashimake monjo (革嶋家文書): a designated cultural treasure, passed down through the Kawashima family over 800 years (from the Kamakura to the Taisho period). 2,129 items.
