Summary of Collection(s)

Collection Size (As of 2012): 

  • Library Materials: 860,230 volumes
    • Japanese: 665,638 volumes
    • Western languages: 194,592 Western volumes

Notable Collection(s)

  • Edo Shogunate Publications (江戸幕府刊行物集成): Assembly of government publications in the Edo period,  from the time in the Tokugawa Ieyasu's (徳川家康) reign to the end of the period.
  • Famine Related Materials (凶作関係資料):  Famine related literature and the bibliography from the Edo period, comprised by Tamari Kizo (玉利喜蔵), the first president of Morioka High School of Agriculture and Forestry (盛岡高等農林学校, a predecessor of Iwate University) (638 items).

    The collection includes famine record from Tempo (天保) year and Genroku (元禄) year, (the beginning of 18th century- the mid.19th century).

  • Miyazaki Collection (宮崎文庫): Iwate prefecture local history collection, which was held by Miyazaki Kyūma (宮崎求馬), a local historian.  The collection mainly consists of Soga document (曽我文書) from the Middle Ages (4,000 volumes in Japanese and Chinese ).

Note: The Guide uses the ALA/LC standard romanization, however, it also reflects different romanization system used by an individual institution.


How to Use the Facility

Using the Library

Prior to the Visit: It seems that no advance inquiry and preparation required, please contact the library for more information.

Upon Arrival:

  • Parking is available. Please obtain the parking permit, 駐車許可証 Chūsha kyokashō at the library counter on the first floor and place it a the front window of your car.


  • Please obtain the visitors' permit, 学外者利用証 Gakugai riyōsho at the library counter.


  • Up to 5 books for 14 days
