About Sanko Library

The origin of Sanko library dates back in 1902.when Ohashi Library (大橋図書館) was founded by Ohashi Sahei (大橋佐平), who was a director of Kobunkan (博文館). In 1964, when Sankō Research Institute for the Study of Buddhism (三康文化研究所 Sankō bunka kenkyūjo) was established, the library became a part of the institution.

The library hold about 256,000 volumes related to the Buddhism as well as woodblock prints and reproductions of old documents from the Edo period.

Collection Size: 256,000 volumes

Notable Collection(s):

  • Nozarashi kikō (野ざらし紀行): Haikai (俳諧) style travelers journals by Matsuo Basho (松尾芭蕉).

  • Kuniezu (国絵図): Japanese land maps by Inō Tadataka (伊能忠敬).

  • Takeda Collection (竹田家文庫): Library materials related to history and miritary(about 8,800 items).

  • Uchida Collection (内田文庫): Library materials related to law(about 4,800 items).

  • Shiio Collection (椎尾文庫): Library materials related to Buddhism(about 9,500 items).

  • Masutani Collection (増谷文庫): Library materials related to religion and Buddhism(about 2,200 items).

Note: The Guide uses the ALA/LC standard romanization, however, it also reflects different romanization system used by an individual institution.

Prior to the Visit: No Advance Inquiry or Preparation is Required  

Upon Arrivlal:

  • Admission: 100 yen (500 yen for 6 tickets and 1,000 yen for 13 tickets)
