About the Museum

The Shibusawa Memorial Museum was established in November 1982 in memory of Eiichi Shibusawa (1840 - 1931). Eiichi Shibusawa was central to the foundation of approximately 500 economic organizations, including nearly 360 corporations.  He also contributed to the creation of some 600 public social enterprises, and Japan's modernization and economic development cannot be discussed without consideration of Shibusawa's enormous contributions.  The museum is located on the former Shibusawa estate, which also includes the Shibusawa gardens, the Bankoro Cottage (晩香廬), and the Seien Bunko Library (青淵文庫), built in the Taisho period and now registered as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. The Bankoro Cottage and the Seien Bunko Library are open to the public on Saturdays.
