About the Ryukoku Museum:

Opened in April 5th 2011, the Ryukoku Museum holds and exhibits a wide variety of cultural artifacts from India to Asia and Japan. The purpose is to deepen the public's understanding of Buddhist culture as well as advancing academic research conducted by Ryukoku University and communicating their achievements to public.

Summary of Collection(s)

Notable Collection:

  • Ōtani Collection: Kōzui Ōtani, the 22nd chief priest of the Honganji School of Shin Buddhism, dispatched three expeditions across Asia 1902 and 1914. This collection consists of materials used by the Otani Expedition members, the first academic expedition in Japan to trace the route of the eastward spread of Buddhism, as well as the items they brought back (about 9,000 items).

Note: The Guide uses the ALA/LC standard romanization, however, it also reflects different romanization system used by an individual institution.

Events and Exhibits

ExhibitShinran Shonin and Shin Buddhism" which introduces the teachings of Shinran Shonin, the development of Shin Buddhism and the history of Honganji as well as the history of Rukoku University.

  • Bezeklik Cave Temples Restoration Exhibits: The display of wall paintings that were depicted in the Number 15 Cave (German Expedition Number 4 Cave) of the Bezeklik Cave Temples in their actual sizes.

  • Seniors: 400(300)yen
  • University students: 400(300)yen
  • High school students: 300(200)yen
  • Junior high school students and under:  Free

Note: Seniors: 65 years old and older. Fees in parentheses () are group rates.
